Freddy Maertens Flandria Cycling Team
After the glorious Merckx years, Belgium is waiting for a new cycling hero. The ‘cycling mad nation’ is convinced to have found a new crown prince, with Freddy Maertens. Freddy, in the middle of the seventies, is very successful in the classics as well as in the grand tours and championships. In 1976 and 1977 he is crowned 2 times in a row best cyclist of the year by winning the Super Prestige Pernod trophy. In 1977, he dominated Merckx-wise the Vuelta by winning not less than 13 of the 19 stages, and of course the general classification. In addition Fast Freddy will win during his Flandria years, 10 stages in the Tour de France, 7 in the Giro, a World Champion title, and several classics like Gent-Wevelgem (2x), Het Volk (2x), Paris-Tours and the Amstel Gold Race. He is by many considered as the best sprinter ever.
